The Operating System of the Universe
Text: John 1:1-3 (NRSV)
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being.”
Text: Colossians 1:15-17 (NKJV)
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.”

John calls Jesus Christ the Word of God. The Greek word is logos. The logos is formally translated as “word” but carries great depth of meaning, especially in the case of the Incarnate Christ. A logos can be anything from a saying to a teaching to a fragment of thought. It can be a discourse, doctrine, or matter in dispute. When John calls Jesus the logos of God, he is encapsulating of all of these ideas and more.
As the logos, Jesus is a declared revelation of God’s mind. His very being and person reveal the inner depths of the Father. His life is an in-person declaration of God’s will and intent for humanity - that God and man become fully united. Sin and darkness made us unable to bridge this gap on our own. For this reason, Jesus, God Himself, assumed human form, went to the Cross, died, resurrected, and ascended. Jesus, as the logos, represents all of humanity. As He is, so are we (1 John 4:17).
In the above passages, both John and Paul imply that Jesus existed in the spiritual realm before becoming incarnate in the natural realm. Imagine that both of these realms can be represented by a computer. A computer is ineffective without an operating system, which supports the computer’s various processes and functions. The operating system is the most important program that runs the entire computer. Jesus is the operating system of the universe. He created everything in His own image, and continues to uphold it. He is, and always has been, in complete control.
Jesus, the logos, is God’s blueprint for everything. The entire Creation order, with all of its beauty and diversity, reflects Jesus Christ. There is nothing that was not made by Him. This means that I can discern the character and nature of Jesus through the elements of His creation (Romans 1:20). All areas of science reveal more of Jesus’ character and nature. Science and God have never been, nor ever will be, at odds. Science reveals the fullness of Jesus.
In Christ, we have been drawn up to participate in the operating system of the entire universe (1 Corinthians 2:10-16; Ephesians 2:6). This is made possible through the indwelling Spirit, who is the personal Presence of the divine logos. We are able to access and proclaim the logos because He dwells in us (Colossians 3:16).
The grace of Jesus allows His children to access and enjoy everything He is. As we continue to pursue greater depths of intimacy with Him, personally and corporately, the secrets of the universe will be laid bare.
